Keys to Financial Planning
There are three basic keys that you must always remember when you are planning and managing your finances. There is more to financial planning that you must attend to, but these three keys you must always keep in mind.
Make More, Spend Less
It’s easier said than done, but it’s a must if you want to reach your financial goals. Spending less is hard because we always want something. Whether it’s anew mp3 player, a new car, a trip abroad, or a cup of coffee, sometimes we just need to say no. If you can say no to bad spending habits and follow a budget, you will see your money start to grow.
Most people will say they can only make as much as their paycheck will give them, but that’s not always true. If you really need money, you can always get a part-time job. If you need some extra cash but aren’t looking for another stressful job in your life, you could sell things on ebay, sell for avon, pampered chef, or another similar business, start a side business, or write a book and collect royalties.
If you already have savings, you should consider investing it. Letting your money earn money is the easiest way to make money, especially if you invest in mutual funds because you don’t have to choose the stocks.
Follow a Budget
If you don’t have a budget, you need to make one. It’s the best and easiest way to know where your money is going and what you can do to cut expenses. First, write down everything you spend your money on. This will show you where all your money goes and you can decide what you need and don’t need. Then make a monthly plan allocating money to different expenses.
Budgeting isn’t as tedious and time consuming as it sounds. Once you make it, all you have to do is follow it. If you’ve planned on spending $100 a month on eating out, don’t spend more than $100 a month. If you planned on making coffee instead of buying a cup every morning, don’t give in to the Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts you pass on the way to work.
Once you start following your budget, you’ll realize how easy it is. If you find one particular part of your budget is too difficult, change it. Nothing is written in stone; just make sure you don’t take the money from something more important. Budgeting is all about prioritizing your money.
Don’t Let your Money Rule your Life
You’ve probably heard many times that money doesn’t buy happiness, but you might know from experience that being poor doesn’t make you happy either. Money is an important part of life and we can’t get around it. Don’t let money rule your life. Don’t stress yourself out looking for ways to save money that seem impossible. Don’t worry about getting rich for retirement. Understand that money will always be in your life because you need it to survive, but don’t let it be the focal point.
Keep these keys to financial planning in mind whenever you start to fall off your plan or get stressed out about money. If money is ruining your life, you need to change it. Change it for the better.
